Boards & Commissions
The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors is always looking for citizens to serve on the County's Boards and Commissions. Interested citizens should reach out to current Board of Supervisors members or to the Auditor's office.
Advisory Board
The advisory board is a non-voting technical advisory committee composed of members of the public safety community. The current board includes representatives from:
- Burlington Police Department
- Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department
- West Burlington Police Department
- Burlington Fire Department
- Des Moines County Fire Association
- Des Moines County EMS Association
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment is responsible for reviewing requests for Variances, Special Use Permits, and Appeals for decisions made by the Land Use Department. Unlike the Zoning Commission, which makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors, all decisions made by the Board of Adjustment are final, pending appeal to the District Court. All members must reside within Des Moines County, but outside the corporate limits of any city. In addition, a majority of the 5 members must reside within the jurisdiction of the County Zoning Ordinance (within 2 miles of the City of Burlington).

Floodplain Advisory Board
The Floodplain Advisory Board provides technical assistance to the Board of Supervisors on matters pertaining to the Floodplain Development Ordinance, including proposed amendments to the ordinance, and the policies and procedures of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) concerning local floodplain development. This board includes representatives from local levee/drainage districts, the insurance industry, and at least one County resident who lives within a floodplain.

Zoning Commission
The Zoning Commission is responsible for providing technical guidance and expertise to the Board of Supervisors in matters related to Zoning and Subdivisions. They facilitate public hearings for subdivisions, ordinance text and map amendments, and major site plans for certain zoning permits. All members must reside within Des Moines County, but outside the corporate limits of any city. In addition, a majority of the 5 members must reside within the jurisdiction of the County Zoning Ordinance (within 2 miles of the City of Burlington).
