The River Days Olympics is a series of outdoor skill competitions along the riverfront — designed for all ages and skill levels. No qualifying rounds, no drug testing, no spandex required.

Compete in casting accuracy, target shooting, and other river-themed challenges for prizes and bragging rights. It’s part field day, part county fair, and 100% Burlington.

Skunk River Float Adventure

Skunk River Float Adventure Join Lee County Conservation and Des Moines County Conservation for a scenic paddle down the Skunk River! Participants will float approximately 9 river miles from Cottonwood Loop at Welter Recreation Area to Indian Path Park while enjoying river scenery and a relaxing summer morning on the water. Date: Saturday, June 20 (Rain Date: Saturday, June 27)  Start Time: 9:00 AM (please arrive early for check-in and shuttle arrangements) Route: Cottonwood Loop at Welter Recreation Area → Indian Path Park This float is expected to take approximately 3–4 hours on the water, with additional time for check-in, shuttle transportation, and loading/unloading boats. Please plan for a half-day outdoor adventure. Registration is $15 per participant and helps cover shuttle transportation, equipment, staffing, and event coordination. Fee applies to all participants, including those bringing personal boats. Register Here!

· Boat use (limited canoes and kayaks available)

· Life jacket (required)

·Shuttle transportation

Participants are welcome to bring their own canoe or kayak. Age Recommendation: This event is recommended for ages 12 and older due to the length of the float and time spent on the water. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please bring:

• Water (plenty!)

• Sunscreen and/or hat

• Clothes and shoes that can get wet

• Snacks if desired

Immerse yourself in a one-of-a-kind nighttime adventure at Flint Creek in Starr's Cave Nature Center on Friday, July 17th! Join us for our Night Creek Stomp from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM for an unforgettable evening exploring the creek after dark. This program is free and open to all ages.

Equipped with water shoes and headlamps, participants will follow a guided trek through the creek while discovering the sights and sounds of nature at night. Listen to the chorus of frogs, watch fireflies light up the evening sky, and keep an eye out for other nocturnal wildlife along the way.

This family-friendly adventure is a great opportunity for friends, families, and outdoor enthusiasts to experience the natural world in a whole new way while making lasting memories together. Be sure to wear clothing suitable for getting wet and bring a headlamp if you have one, as only a limited number will be available to borrow.

Don’t miss this unique chance to experience the magic of the creek after sunset and connect with the outdoors in a completely different light. No RSVP is required.

REAP Assembly - Projects in Action

Iowa’s premier funding program for outdoor recreation, conservation and historic preservation will be the focus of 19 meetings across the state, where Iowans can share ideas and visions for their county and communities.

Established in 1989, the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program has funded nearly $430 million in projects, including water quality improvements, habitat protection, roadside prairies, historical development, park and trail development, and conservation education.

July 22, 10 a.m., Burlington, Starr’s Cave Nature Center, 11627 Starrs Cave Park Road, in Burlington, for residents of Des Moines, Henry, Lee and Louisa counties.

 

Every two years, Iowans gather for regional assemblies to direct the future of our state’s natural and cultural resources. This year we are reimagining the assembly by putting local voices and proven projects that have transformed our communities and improved quality of life at the center of the conversation,” said Michelle Wilson, REAP coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “This is your chance to learn about REAP, connect with like-minded citizens who are interested in natural and cultural resource work, and voice how REAP can better serve your community and your region.”

What to Expect:

The Showcase: Each region will highlight a local project, and discuss how it was realized through REAP funding, providing a blueprint for what is possible in your own backyard.

The Citizen Idea Wall: We invite you to add your ideas to a regional “Citizen Idea Wall.” What does your region need next? Your input will form the basis of your regional recommendations and inform your county’s 5-Year REAP plan.

The Civic Mandate: Per Iowa law, this is your opportunity to review REAP expenditures and recommend changes to state policy.

You will elect five delegates to carry these ideas to REAP Congress, held on August 29, at the Iowa State Capitol.

Discover the art of Dutch oven cooking at Starr's Cave Nature Center on Wednesday, July 22. Learn how to prepare delicious outdoor meals while helping create a full Dutch oven feast, including an appetizer, main course, and dessert.

This hands-on program is perfect for beginners and experienced outdoor cooks alike. Participants will enjoy the meal they help prepare and pick up tips and techniques to use on future camping trips, backyard gatherings, or outdoor adventures.
