Adventure with a Bearing
Discover the excitement of navigation and outdoor adventure with the compass course at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve!Jacklyn Goodman, Naturalist / Conservation Technician
What is a compass course? A compass course is a fun and interactive outdoor activity that challenges participants to use a compass for navigation. This engaging activity is perfect for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike, offering a unique way to connect with nature while mastering orienteering skills.
The course at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve features three distinct routes, each marked by a specific shape: a circle, square, or octagon. To begin, simply choose your route and head to the starting tree, where each route begins. Each tag provides your shape, a starting number, and a bearing (direction) to follow. Using your compass, navigate from tag to tag, following the sequential bearings until you complete the course. It’s a rewarding experience that challenges your problem-solving and navigation skills. Don’t have a compass? No problem! Stop by Starr’s Cave Nature Center during open hours to borrow one and get a quick tutorial from our friendly staff. They’ll even point you to the starting tree so you can begin your adventure with confidence.
Now is the perfect time to try the compass course. With the leaves fallen from the trees and the brush thinned, visibility is at its best. The open landscape makes it much easier to spot tags and move through the terrain without the usual obstacles of thick foliage. The crisp winter air and clear paths create an ideal environment for honing your navigation skills while enjoying the beauty of the season. Whether you’re looking for a solo adventure, a family outing, or a group activity with friends, the compass course offers a fun and memorable experience for everyone.
This activity isn’t just fun—it’s practical, too. In today’s tech-driven world, learning to navigate with a compass remains a valuable skill. Orienteering skills are useful in emergencies, whether you’re lost or assisting someone who needs help. Beyond its practicality, mastering a compass brings a sense of accomplishment and boosts your confidence in the great outdoors.
The compass course is also an excellent way to prepare for exciting upcoming events, such as the Compass Quest at the I LOVE County Parks Winter Games on February 22nd at Big Hollow Recreation Area. This action-packed event begins at 7 AM and includes activities for all ages. Highlights include a Facebook Ice Fishing Contest, a scenic 5K & 1-Miler, a 5K and Rifle Shoot Challenge, and a .22 Caliber Open Range. The Compass Quest, which starts at 10 AM at the Shooting Range Complex, will test your navigation skills in a fun and competitive setting. Practicing at Starr’s Cave ahead of time ensures you’ll feel ready to take on the challenge and enjoy the competition.
