As we slide into 2026, Des Moines County Conservation invites the public, families, and ladies 18+ to bundle up and discover everything January has to offer outdoors.
Upcoming Events
Start the year off strong with a Recovery Hike on January 2 at 2:30 PM at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Whether you are shaking off the holiday hustle or simply craving time outside, this free guided hike is a refreshing way to enjoy the quiet beauty of winter. No registration is required and participants should dress for the weather.
Ladies Adventure Group - New Years Hike
Next, lace up your boots and join the Ladies Adventure Group for a New Years Hike on January 6 at 3:30 PM, also at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. The Ladies Adventure Group is designed for women ages 18+ who want to explore outdoor recreation opportunities while connecting with like-minded ladies. Join Naturalist Shania for a guided hike that is both energizing and welcoming. No registration is required and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather.
An annual favorite returns later this month with Eagle Watch 2026 on January 24 from 10 AM to Noon! This program begins at the Port of Burlington with an engaging eagle presentation, then continues with a caravan to Lock and Dam 18 for the chance to see bald eagles soaring, fishing, and gathering along the Mississippi River. Staff will be on hand with binoculars to borrow and ready to answer questions, making this an exciting and family-friendly experience. Registration is not required and participants should dress for the weather.
Cross Country Skiing
If winter brings four inches or more of snow, the parks open for cross country skiing. Skis are available to rent, making it easy to try something new or revisit a favorite winter activity. Call the Nature Center at 319 753 5808 or stop in to grab a pair!
Not ready to stay outside for long? Starr’s Cave Nature Center offers a warm place to explore Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM. The hands-on exhibits are geared toward kids but are just as fun for adults. Pair your visit with a short quarter mile walk to the bridge at Starr’s Cave, then head inside to warm up and keep exploring.
For the ultimate winter escape, the Ranger Cabin at Big Hollow Recreation Area is waiting. This fully furnished cabin offers peaceful winter views and is the perfect place to relax with a good book or movie. If ice conditions are safe, ice fishing opportunities are available nearby, and park trails remain open for those who want to bundle up and explore. Book your stay at mycountyparks.com!
Yes, it’s cold, but winter is also calm, beautiful, and full of adventure. With so many ways to explore both indoors and out, Des Moines County Conservation looks forward to seeing you make the most of winter this January.
