Upcoming Events
Warm up this holiday season with our Trivia Night on Friday, December 5th, at Starr’s Cave Nature Center. Gather your team of 2–6 for a night of laughter and brain teasing questions. Pre-registration is required as space is limited, and the cost is $20 per person, with prizes awarded to the top three teams! Doors open at 6 PM and trivia begins at 6:30 PM. All funds raised will support the Environmental Education department for future programming! Register online at Des Moines County Conservation RecDesk.
Ladies Adventure Group Sound Bath
For a peaceful evening of relaxation, women 18 and older can join the Ladies Adventure Group for a Sound Bath on Tuesday, December 16th, from 6:00–7:30 PM. Unwind to the soothing sounds of crystal bowls and chimes inside Starr's Cave Nature Center, reflecting on the past year and welcoming the calm of the approaching season! The cost is $15 per person, space is limited to 25 participants, and registration online through Des Moines County Conservation RecDesk is required. This experience offers a perfect escape from the hustle of the holidays and leaves you feeling rested and refreshed.
Put on your most outrageous holiday sweater and hit the trails for our Ugly Sweater 5K on Saturday, December 20th, kicking off at 9:00 AM at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Participants can run or walk the 5K course while spreading holiday cheer! Pre-registration is $20 or $25 on race day. Pre-register on Des Moines County Conservation RecDesk or in person the day of the event. It is the perfect way to stay active, embrace the season, and show off your best (or worst!) festive fashion.
If cold weather adventures aren't your preference, enjoy a cozy getaway at the Ranger Cabin at Big Hollow Recreation Area. Even as temperatures drop, you can still explore the outdoors, as Des Moines County parks remain open daily. Take a stroll along quiet trails, spot wildlife, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the season. Remember to bundle up with warm layers, gloves, and boots for a safe and enjoyable experience. Starr's Cave Nature Center exhibits are open Monday-Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM, offering indoor fun for all ages!
