February 2025 Department Updates
January was a month full of progress at Des Moines County Conservation! From engaging educational programs and hard work behind the scenes, our team has been dedicated to connecting the community with nature and enhancing outdoor experiences.Jacklyn Goodman, Naturalist / Conservation Technician
Soaring Success at Eagle Watch
Our annual Eagle Watch was a resounding success, with 70 participants learning about Bald Eagle ecology from Naturalist Jacklyn and Volunteer Lori Carnes. The day concluded with a caravan to Lock and Dam 18, where attendees were treated to the sight of an impressive 250 eagles. Despite the chilly, windy weather, the conditions were perfect for eagle viewing, as the birds gathered near the open water by the dam.
Indoor Fitness Fun: Westland Mall Crawl
This January, we hosted our first-ever indoor 5K, the Westland Mall Crawl. This unique event encouraged participants to stay active during the cold winter months and was a great success with 30 participants. Keep an eye out for more creative wellness events as we continue to promote fitness and recreation.
Streamlined Registration with RecDesk

Shooting Range Memberships
Getting your Big Hollow Shooting Range Membership is easier than ever! The entire process is done online and takes about an hour. For just $45, you can enjoy access to one of the best outdoor shooting ranges in Iowa for an entire year. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to practice your skills in a top-notch facility.
Team Updates
Our Environmental Education team is undergoing an exciting transition as Naturalist Jacklyn moves into a new role on the field crew. Some programming will be on hold until we hire a new Naturalist. If you know someone who is passionate about the outdoors and teaching—please encourage them to apply! In addition, we’re seeking a Summer Naturalist Intern to help lead our summer camps and programs. We’re thrilled to welcome Trevor, our new high school intern, whose energy and fresh ideas are already making a positive impact!
At Big Hollow, our field staff have been hard at work maintaining equipment, combating invasive species, and preparing the Big Hollow Ranger Cabin for rentals. They’re also in the process of upgrading the shooting range with a new backboard system to improve the experience for visitors. Several staff members also attended Winterfest, an annual conference offering professional development and networking opportunities.
