Nighttime Adventures: Owl Prowls

Environmental Education programs in February included two Owl Prowls. Participants had the opportunity to delve into the world of owls during these events. They learned about local owls, asked questions, and ventured out on a night walk to call for owls, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of these remarkable creatures. One was for the general public, with 12 participants, while the other was held for the PiECES after-school program, where students and their families attended.

Reel in the Fun: Ice Fishing Contest

Another highlight was the Facebook Ice Fishing Contest at Big Hollow Recreation Area on February 22nd. We partnered with the Iowa DNR, which provided ice fishing gear for participants. The event showcased several winners who took home branded DMCC wood cookies along with ice fishing gear. The top prize for crappie went to George Gruenther, who caught an 11-inch crappie, while Jace Skalinski secured the first-place title for bass with a 12.5-inch catch.

Team Updates

Our Environmental Education team has been hard at work planning and marketing upcoming events. A highlight is Trevor, our high school intern, who has been leading the development of the Woodland Warrior Challenge Run. He has partnered with several community members to create obstacles, making this event a unique and exciting experience.

Meanwhile, Chloe, our SCC intern, has been busy designing a QR code scavenger hunt inside Starr’s Cave Nature Center. This interactive activity is perfect for rainy days and is available for all visitors. She is also working on an artistic rendition of Starr’s Cave Nature Center for her final project.

Additionally, an Eagle Scout project is underway to construct Leopold Benches to be placed along the trails at Starr’s Cave, enhancing the park experience for visitors.

The field staff have been hard at work maintaining the parks. They recently inspected wood duck boxes, recording usage and adding fresh wood shavings to prepare them for the season. In addition, they have been cleaning the Big Hollow Ranger Cabin as needed and updating the backboards at the shooting range, along with tackling various other projects to keep the parks in top shape and prepare them for opening.
